Nutrition is 'the process of nourishing or being nourished' --- Sounds easy --- Eat good food, job done!

Really it should be that easy, except in the modern world it appears to have become much more complicated. Partly this is due to faster lifestyles, longer life-spans, access to a wider variety of foods, global transportation of produce, advanced farming practices, more research creating more options, new food processing techniques, mass communication of dietary information and advice, easy access to lots of food --- and so on.

At Elizabeth Orme Clinic we have found that people often are suffering information overload and can no longer 'see the wood for the trees'. Also their nutrition goals may vary hugely:

  • I want to find foods that help my energy
  • I keep getting colds, I want to eat to help my immune system
  • I have osteoporosis. I want to know what mineral-rich foods to eat
  • I have eaten junk food for years. I think I need to detox!
  • I react to so many foods. I don't know what to eat
  • I want to eat according to my genetics
  • I have tried Paleo, Low Carb, Low Fat. Now what?
  • I seem to react to natural foods. Do I need to cut out Amines?
  • I want to eat all organic, fresh food
  • Whenever I eat I feel bloated and unwell. I need dietary help
  • I am so constipated. I want to focus on foods that help me 'to go'
  • I want to loose some weight
  • And more ------

We have evolved Nutrition Options to help to guide our clients towards their individual nutritional path. First of all, we sort out one really important distinction. Is your health status such that you need a Therapeutic Change? Or are you in our Healthy and Optimal Nutrition category?

Therapeutic Change is Stage 1 and Healthy and Optimal Nutrition is Stage 2. Many clients seeking nutritional advice can jump straight to Healthy and Optimal Nutrition. In this case their health issues do not demand a complex approach and they can be recommended one of our Healthy and Optimal options. But others need to address more chronic or severe health concerns and 'therapeutic change' specific to that issue is required for a period of time. Sometimes this change needs to be applied for a very long time and sometimes for just a few weeks. In this situation one of our Therapeutic Change options will be recommended; the aim being to transition later to an option chosen from Healthy and Optimal Nutrition.

Allergies and intolerances to foods fall within our category needing Therapeutic Change. Metabolic Typing (a way of eating) falls within the category of Healthy and Optimal Nutrition (though now and then we use it therapeutically).

You will notice we don't use the word 'diet' if we can avoid it! This is because we don't encourage the concept of a 'diet'. This implies a short burst of something to achieve an end 'and then what?' Rather our options are to encourage making lifestyle changes that just become 'the enjoyable way I do things'.

We know that one of the factors that holds people back is a shortage of time. It can be a challenge knowing what to buy and how to turn it quickly in to a healthy meal. Also following a restricted food list can create real difficulties with menu options and there can be a tendency to eat the same meals over and over again.

This does not have to be the case and it does not need to be difficult. We have access to practitioner software that allows us to set up your details within a real food database. All the filters appropriate for you have been preset by us. We send you an email giving you access to your profile. Within the area you will find Recipes, Ingredients Lists (to print out for use when shopping) and Menu Plans for 7 days at a time. We can create a Menu Plan for you. Alternatively you can create one for yourself choosing from the multiple recipes available. Access to this database is an additional fee. This gives you access for 12 months.

Therapeutic Change

This is when nutritional advice is tailored more specifically to health issues that are of concern. As mentioned above, chronic or more serious health concerns may benefit from nutrition advice that will support therapeutic change.  We may advise a standard nutritional program or we may devise one specifically for you. For example:

  • Gluten free and casein free
  • Moderate histamine
  • Low glutamate
  • Moderate salicylate
  • Low amylose
  • Low reactive
  • Sugar free
  • Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
  • Gut and Psychology Diet (GAPS)
  • Small Intestinal Bacteria Overgrowth (SIBO)
  • Alllergy and/or intolerance free (based on your test results)
  • And many more.

Alternatively within Therapeutic Change we may give you Food Lists that provide nutrients for certain conditions:

  • Foods to eat to increase certain minerals
  • Foods to eat for thyroid health
  • Foods to eat to help immunity
  • Foods to eat to help fatigue
  • Foods to assist constipation
  • Foods to reduce eczema
  • Foods to help gallstones
  • And much more.

Healthy and Optimal

We use our Healthy and Optimal options when someone does not have many health concerns and is wanting to optimise their nutritional status. This may be for a reason (taking-up exercise, New Year's resolution, just turned 50, getting married) or it may simply be to feel as good as possible.

We provide easy to follow nutritional advice with menu plans and recipes. We select from a wide choice according to client preference and suitability:

  • Vegetarian
  • Vegan
  • Primal or Paleo
  • Low glycemic
  • Whole food
  • Weston Price
  • Metabolic Typing
  • And more -----------------
  • OR we build an individual plan using practitioner software.
